Laptops are powerful mobile computers often with the same capacity and software of many desktops. They offer greater connectivity, freeing you to take your work almost anywhere. Because laptops take up less space and offer greater portability, they also can be targets for theft. Here are some steps that you can take to keep your laptop safe.
Use common sense. Just as you wouldn't leave cash or jewelry lying about while you chat with friends across the room, don't leave your laptop unattended. Never assume that your laptop will be safe if you walk away. This includes using your backpack (with laptop in it) to "save a table" for lunch or leaving your laptop to go use the restroom in the library or lab.
Keep your laptop out of sight when you're not using it, or place it in a locked cabinet. Don't leave your laptop on the seat of your car. Place it in the trunk or hide it under a seat. Make sure you safeguard external drives and cards that could be easily removed from your laptop.
Be sure your laptop is identifiable. Write down the make, model, and serial number of your laptop, and take a photo of it for insurance purposes. Engrave the outer case of your laptop with your driver's license number, or permanently mark it with a white or silver marker. Marking your laptop helps the police return your hardware if it is recovered after being stolen.
You may consider buying and using a cable lock. It can be attached to the Universal Security Slot (USS) on your laptop. These devices cost about $30 - $50 and can be purchased at office supply stores or online. Just remember, they only work if you use them properly. Attach it to a strong immovable and unbreakable object. A cable lock may not stop a determined thief with bolt cutters, but it will deter casual thieves who may take advantage of you if you step away.
